Creating depth of field: doesn’t that concept belong in photography, not cartooning?

Yes, and photography and cartooning have a surprising amount in common! Both count as art forms ?and in this case, both make use the concepts of foreground, middle ground and background to create a sense of depth in pictures.

The action in a cartoon scene usually takes place in the middle ground

The middle ground is where your cartoon character has all its adventures. But the most interesting cartoon scenes have a wonderful sense of depth, with things appearing in the extreme foreground as well as the distant background, and a whole lot of storytelling going on in between.

What are the keys to creating depth of field?

There are two essential things to remember if you want to create amazing scenes for your characters to inhabit . They are

1. Overlapping
2. Intensity
